A man who allegedly shot a Wellington taxi driver is schizophrenic and may be unfit to stand trial, according to his lawyer. Dylan Nuku, 26, made an appearance in Wellington District Court, via video link, on Friday. He was arrested on November 21 after a manhunt following the shooting of taxi driver Alem Tessema in Miramar. Nuku has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Although one mental screening report has been carried out, Nuku's lawyer John Miller said a further one was needed to determine whether he is fit to stand trial."The first report does show elements of insanity," Mr Miller said."It (the report) does not think he was mentally disturbed at the time of the offence but he is suffering from schizophrenia."As late as November, he was presenting as seriously mentally ill and this does need to be explored further." Nuku will remain in custody until his next appearance in March.
