A West Coast man broke down in tears as he was accused of the murder of a baby.
The 10-month-old boy from Hokitika died shortly before midday after being airlifted to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries.
A 30-year-old man is facing one charge of murder in relation to the incident.
He appeared by video link in court, supported in court by his mother and sister.
The man repeatedly wept, turning away from the camera.
An application for bail was denied, but his lawyer has indicated he’ll be fighting the charge.
His next court appearance will be at 9am on the 30th of July, at the Greymouth High Court.
The man was earlier granted name suppression.
