UPDATED 3.26PM: The headquarters of the Rebels gang in Christchurch has been shut down by police - with the help of the community. The property on Vauges Road in Northcote has been raided several times in the past few months. Drugs and guns have been seized, and police say they've had a lot of information from local people. Detectives said locals have helped drive the Rebels out. Detective Inspector Darryl Sweeney said communities deserve to feel safe, but they don't when there's a gang down the road from the school. Shirley-Papanui board chairman Mike Davidson said it's fantastic a community can work together, to deal with an issue in its own backyard. "We don't really have these type of people in our community, it's just not good for the environment we live in," he said. "Gangs intimidate people, so a lot of people are scared to do anything about it, which is a shame. The more people stand up, and not necessarily to confront any of them, but to go to police with concerns, the better off we're going to be." Police said the community was clear from the start that criminal enterprise wasn't welcome, praising those provided a wealth of information about the gang's activities.
